The groom was all set. He was radiating with love in his dark suit and bow-tie. He had a boutonniere of the same colour as the theme colour of the wedding- luminous green. By his side was his best man, his best friend from time immemorial. These two had grown up together. They had played together, hunted for women together. They had even dated sisters at some point.
He was grinning from ear to ear. He had to. He spent years chasing this wonderful girl. His bride to be. Soon to be his wife. At first, she did not pay any attention to his advances. Still, he persisted. He begged. He cajoled. He bought all the rose flowers he could find. All the Cadbury chocolates on the shelves. Until finally he got the attention of this piece of art.
He was beside himself with joy. He felt like Eliud Kipchoge after winning the marathon. One thing led to another, and that other thing led to today. His wedding day. The church was oozing beautiful faces. All colours of the rainbow were well represented in the various clothes they were wearing. On his left side was the choir. They were singing jubilant songs as they awaited the entrance of the bride. Their angelic voices radiated in the air as the soloist boomed in the mic. After all, there would be some good food to replace their energy after this.
The groom glanced towards the church entrance once again. The bride was late. But which bride has ever come on time? Being late was part of the tradition. Some families even demanded that the groom increases the bride price before their girl stepped on the aisle. This was normal. So, he waited.
The pastor flipped another page of the Bible. From his expression, he must have been doing last touches to the sermon. Whatever God has put together.....An hour came and went. Then another. And another. The choir stopped singing. The congregation started fanning themselves with handkerchieves. Then the maid of honour walked in. She was carrying a letter. The groom blinked. Something wet trickled down his cheeks. His knees became weak. The maid of honour danced in front of him. His head began to swim. Someone shouted somewhere....a hand was grabbing him...SILENCE.
